Taking of “Digital” |
What are mandatory thinking for any organization should start for “Digital Transformation”?
Ø Most of the times Organization spend on IT largely on the “T” technology part rather than the Information they already have. “I” information should he valued more than “T”.
Ø Mostly CIO are focused on deploying Technology than optimizing information Assets.
Ø Digital Transformation is more than Data and Technology. It more about Information.
A quote from David Foote Chief Analyst
“Gone is the tendency to hire specialist & large team of limited range permanent staffs for long-term initiates. New model require smaller teams made up of multitasker and multidimensionally skilled worker with SMW, business Savvy, technology skills and range of appropriate interpersonal, political skills”

Information Chaos |
In every organization, information is flooded in the form of documents, videos, emails, yammer posts and are backbone of org.
An accelerating state of massive information disruption and that is the becomes increasingly unmanageable to utilize effectively. Using the information and exceeds customer expectation is the competitive challenge today.
In the face of all these change employees like CIO are increasingly under trouble. Some used to refer that CIO stands for Career Is Over.
Few review how CIO see their “IT”.
Ø “IT” should be a commodity service, purchase as needed.
Ø IT will change significantly in next few years.
Ø Few thinks the complete overhaul of the IT in next few years.
In the Digital transformation path, information is becoming central currency by which organization create value. And on the other information chaos is creating more and more challenging.
Enterprise System |
A view of How Current enterprise systems looks like?
Ø It’s like an IT behaves as train system moving huge volume of data from A to B in a fixed tracks.
Ø It’s a world IT reduces costs by replace human effort with technology.
Ø Processes are standardized automating by simple and repetitive processes.
Ø Most of the leaders are tech-oblivious to the technology
Ø New technology still uses old strategies instead of developing new strategies.
Ø Complexity equals the job security.
Ø Most spending is CAPEX.
Ø Pure technical skills are valued. The focus is on development not on integration.
A view of how Future enterprise systems moving to.
Ø IT may act as a taxi company where information journey will be flexible and constantly changing.
Ø IT will be focused on raising value. IT will be part of growing revenue not just cutting costs.
Ø Processes will become agile. The emphasis will shift to how a knowledge worker will react and interpret rapidly changing customer info.
Ø Leader will become tech-aware. Personal experience with technology will be carried over into the workplace.
Ø New Tech will derive new strategies.
Ø Simplicity will be valued. Complex solutions will be replaced by simple and quick to implement.
Ø Most spending is OPEX. Projects need to be justified in one quarter not multiple years.
Ø Technical skills in context are valued.
Digital Transformation Strategy |
As we shift the understanding to catchup the market on digital transformation, we should to enable organization to think on 4 major areas;
1. How do you manage the risk of growing volume of information?
2. How do you transfer and automate your information intense business processes?
3. How do you use information better engage customer and employees?
4. How do you get business insight out of all information all gathering?
Managing risk |
Managing and understanding the risk is vital part of the transformation. We need to define strategies to find, produce and protect their information. Information can be CONTRACTS, EMAILS or MESSAGES.
In addition to this most organization will have industry specific compliance requirement tied to how they manage the information.
For eg. The HLS organization must demonstrate compliance with HIPAA security rule
These kinds of unique rules are there for every industry and may vary by country. Data breach and security has been magnified by this concern.
Process automation |
Organization can no longer have the weakness in the processes. In the next few years there will be multiple phase of massive automations in the business processes. If the first wave is about be digitizing the existing processes and then next wave will be much more radical and involve the actual reinvention of business processes from the ground up.
Engagement |
In the digital world rapidly changing information technologies are ability to engage is the key to success.
Engaging CUSTOMERS is key to the success
Engaging PARTNERS is key to the success
Engaging EMPLOYEES is key to the success
If we fail to engage these 3 noun’s will make the organization falling behind the competition.
In the most organization the systems are used to engage employees are an afterthought. In far too many organization collaboration is just another sending around big attachments on email to the long list of recipients and asking for everyone to comment and sending those thru reply all message.
Social technology like “Yammer” has to be utilized and directly tied to business processes. And most importantly these social tools need to connect more directly to the back-end business process.
For eg.
Wipro’s Facebook page, Wipro’s Twitter page, Wipro’s Youtube etc , these are not connected to the backend systems.
Insight |
Most of the organizations are struggling how to extract insight and mitigate risk relative to the massive volume of information and data they are accumulating. This not about the Big Data also refers to as Dark data trapped in long forgotten repositories often without accompanying with metadata. BigData is driving by IT mostly think about how to apply technology on large volume of data. For the dark data Cognitive computing plays a major role which operates in natural language and evidence based recommendation and is not bound by volume/ memory/format. This technology helps new opportunity to organization understand and interpret the data they have. This will show them insight into their data changes they have.
Most of the organizations are very early stage of this cognitive computing transition.
